February's Cool Shit

Check out what has been bringing the UnderBelly team joy or curiosity this month!

I picked up this book because it had literally 3 pages of praise ranging from Roxane Gay to Vogue to Trevor Noah. Homegoing starts in Ghana at the beginning of the slave trade and follows two parallel family lines for 8 generations and paints a picture so vivid I had to put the book down regularly. This book is beautiful and tragic and a must-read for everyone and a great way to kick off Black History Month. But maybe be ready with a few tissues.

Movie: Boiling Point, 2021

My partner recently gifted me a pair of nunchucks after expressing an interest in learning self-defense. While likely impractical for fighting off the bad guys, they are particularly fun to use, plus I’m always a sucker for learning a new skill that is equally frustrating as it is rewarding. You can rent it through Amazon, AppleTV or watch it free on Roku!

Movie: Everything Everywhere All At Once, 2022

Inspired by the nomination list of the Oscars this year, I decided to give it a go to Everything Everywhere All at Once. A lot of people had mixed reviews but I am definitely the one that thinks it was purely magical (literally). In the movie, we follow Evelyn, a Chinese Immigrant on her journey as she has to confront a dark power that could ruin her family (or bring it back together). The movie was weird, really funny, and the whole theme around family was expressed beautifully. The imagination behind this movie is chef's kiss. You can rent it online via Amazon or Hulu with a Showtime subscription!

We are so excited to be able to finally share with you a project that has been a year in the making! We illustrated a children’s book 😍 The story reads as prose and is a love letter to trees and the midwest. All trees, animals, and ecosystems can be found here in Wisconsin.
